Movie Review: The Master

I love Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) and was happy to hear he was finally directing another film after a five year hiatus.

From Rotten Tomatoes: A striking portrait of drifters and seekers in post World War II America, Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master unfolds the journey of a Naval veteran (Joaquin Phoenix) who arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future – until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman).

Rotten Tomatoes rating: 85%
Mountain Xpress rating: 4.5 stars

Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. I have loved Philip Seymour Hoffman for years but never really cared for Joaquin Phoenix (I preferred his brother River). They were both great in the film though even if Phoenix’s character was crazy. I’m sure you’ve heard all the Oscar buzz as well as that the movie is supposedly based on Scientology. It’s a bit weird, as to be expected from Paul Thomas Anderson, but very interesting.
